Can you guess how many letters are in the Hawaiian alphabet? Thirteen.. Here are some interesting facts about the Hawaiian alphabet for you!
There are no consonant clusters in the Hawaiian language.
Hawaiian words must always end with a vowel.
Hawaiian words must have at least one vowel.
An okina ( ‘ ) is a glottal stop – it is also considered a consonant, so only appears between vowels.
The kahako ( ¯ ) makes vowels longer, so it occurs only over vowels.
The Hawaiian alphabet consists of thirteen letters: the five vowels and eight consonants, the consanants being: h, k, l, m, n, p, w, the eighth is the okina ( ‘ ) – its sound is the glottal stop that occurs between “oh-oh”. The vowels have two sounds, stressed and unstressed, as follows:
a, as in water
e, as in wet
i, as in bit
o, as in obey
u, as in pull
a, as in ah
e, as in hey
i, as in police
o, as in bow
u, as in open
Two vowel combinations usually merge as a diphthong, some examples being:
ou, as in soul
oi, as in loiter
ae, like “y” in my
ei, as in veil
ai, like “i” in light
au, like “ou” in out
ao, like “ow” in how
There is no “s” in the Hawaiian language; to Pluralize a word, you must put na before the word. Example:
pua – flower / na pua – flowers
maka – eye / na maka – eyes
‘ilo – dog / na ‘ilio – dogs
There are other ways to pluralize, but this is the easiest for this pronunciation lesson. So now that you are familiar with the Hawaiian alphabet, time to start planning your next big vacation to the most beautiful islands in the world!
Cozumel Mexico is located just 5 miles off the Yucatan coast. It is very accessible to the Riviera Maya and Cancun, Mexico. Described by Jacque Cousteau as the best diving area in the World ! The famous Plancar Reef is trhree miles offshore and is renowned for its underwater clarity of up to 150 feet. Cozumel is a divers and snorklers paradise.
Cozumel also has wonderful beaches. On the eastern side of the island the beaches are gorgeous white sand. Between the north and south hotel zones on the island’s west coast you’ll find the vibrant city of San Miguel, population 90,000. This safe, extraordinarily friendly Mayan/Mexican community has somehow managed to retain its own customs and cultural identity despite the increasing influx of visitors.
San Miguel, in fact remains one of the very few places left in the Mayan Riviera where visitors can truly experience and even become involved in traditional Yucatecan culture. It’s also a great place for shopping and sampling a wide variety of Mexican, Yucatecan and international cuisine.
