Playa de Arena Gorda, Dominican Republic -- Riu Hotels & Resorts was the chain with more hotels awarded in the last Apple Award's edition. After six years of its launching into the North American market, the RIU trademark (www.riu.com) has systematically collected accolades as recognition to its quality in the main gala awards in the United States and Canada. In the last edition of the Apple Vacations Awards, one of the leading tour operators of the United States, nine RIU hotels were awarded, being the chain that accumulated more distinctions. In this edition, celebrated in Chicago in September, 4 RIU hotels in the Dominican Republic received the Golden Award (Riu Palace Macao, Riu Taino, ClubHotel Riu Merengue and ClubHotel Riu Bachata), 4 hotels in Mexico (Riu Palace Mexico, Riu Playacar, ClubHotel Riu Tequila and ClubHotel Riu Jalisco) as well as the only hotel the company operates at the moment in Jamaica, Riu Tropical Bay. It is important to emphasize that Riu Palace Mexico received, for the third consecutive year, the Crystal Award for "Best Service & Staff". In addition, RIU was finalist (among the first 4) in the categories "Best hotel chain", "Best All-Inclusive hotel" (Riu Palace Mexico) and "Best service and staff" (also Riu Palace Mexico). RIU achieved six Apple Awards last year. This year's nine awards show the powerful advancement of the RIU brand name in the ultra competitive North American market. This public recognition in the United States is complemented by similar distinctions in Canada, where RIU, in spite of its recent arrival to the Canadian market, has been already selected among the "10 best chains of the world", by the travel agents in this country. Likewise, "Hotels" magazine, reference journal for the North American hotel industry, indicated in its special summer issue that RIU Hotels & Resorts is already ranked 29th among the largest hotel chains of the world, based on room capacity. RIU has 110 hotels in 13 countries and over 14,500 workers. The hotel chain, that will reach its 50th Anniversary in November, dedicates exclusively to the beach and sun tourism. The travel agents in three European countries, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland, have selected RIU in the last five years as "Best hotel chain of the world" whereas in Spain and Germany it has received a multitude of distinctions.
